Questions from Our Community

  • Why does Health First need financial support from me and our community?

Health First is the largest provider of charitable health care services in our community. Our four not-for-profit hospitals treat and care for everyone who comes through our doors, including those who cannot pay for their care. As a not-for-profit, Health First reinvests millions of dollars every year back into the community in order to provide the highest quality of care.

While our operations are funded primarily by fee for service, Health First operates on the slimmest of margins; typically not more than 1 to 3 percent. The majority of revenues are from our hospitals and outpatient services with government (Medicare and Medicaid), private insurance companies and self-paying customers. Unfortunately, Medicare or Medicaid does not cover our actual costs of treating patients. In the past, the shortfall was made up as best we could with private insurers to help balance the scale.

In order to keep up with advances in new technologies, treatments and equipment, Health First depends on the generosity of the community we serve. Donations to the Health First Foundation go directly toward making sure we are able to keep up with the fast-paced changes of modern medicine by purchasing new equipment, improving facilities, training our associates and making sure Health First offers our patients the highest quality care.

  • Are there other sources of funding for Health First besides Medicaid, Medicare and private patient insurance?

Community support through the Health First Foundation plays an important role in helping us maintain and improve our facilities and services. Providing the level of health care we all want requires a strong foundation of community participation. Private donations and grants support programs such as The Center for Family Caregivers, a community-centered resource offering innovative programs to those affected by memory disorders, and help to provide hospice care to all regardless of a patient's ability to pay.

In addition, 100% of donor directed gifts go directly to the donor's intended cause. An advantage of being a part of an Integrated Delivery Network, Foundation administration and fundraising expenses net of direct event costs are underwritten by the Health First organization. Rest assured your donations go directly to the cause you designated. By giving to the Health First Foundation, your gift is guaranteed to remain here in our community, directly benefiting your friends, family and neighbors.

  • Are my contributions to the Health First Foundation tax-deductible?

All contributions to the Health First Foundation qualify for tax deductions to the full extent permitted by law. Health First and the Health First Foundation are 501(c)(3) tax-exempt, not-for-profit organizations recognized by the Internal Revenue Service and the state of Florida. The Health First Foundation is further classified as a public charity under Section 509(a)(1) of The Internal Revenue Code.

While cash donations are the most common method of giving, contributions of appreciated assets such as stocks and bonds, can have added tax benefits for the donor.

The Health First Foundation welcomes your participation in the life-saving and humanitarian efforts at whatever level is right for you. No gift is too small when it comes to serving the needs of our families, our neighbors, and ourselves.

When you give, your donation may be restricted for use by a specific Health First hospital or program, or you can allow your gift to be used where the need is the greatest.
