Jose Vega, MD
A neurohospitalist is a provider who specializes in providing neurological care for patients while they are in the hospital.
When you require hospitalization for a neurological problem, your provider or an Emergency Department physician will coordinate your admission with a neurohospitalist. The neurohospitalists work closely with hospital staff to coordinate your care.
Jose L. Vega, MD, is part of our Health First neurohospitalist team. He is board certified Neurohospitalist serving patients at Health First’s Holmes Regional Medical Center. Before joining Health First Medical Group, Dr. Vega was a Staff Neurologist for inpatient consultations for Baptist Hospital in Miami, Kendall Regional Hospital in Miami and Wuesthoff Medical Center in Rockledge. His responsibilities included outpatient clinic, inpatient consults, EEG interpretations, tPA administration (for treatment of embolic or thrombotic stroke) and Neuro ICU care.
Dr. Vega earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology from Rutgers University in Newark, NJ. He earned his Doctor of Medicine and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from the New Jersey Medical School/Rutgers University. His Doctoral thesis was titled Role of Systemic Catecholamines in the Suppression of Antibody Production after Acute Spinal Cord Injury.
Dr. Vega completed two post doctoral research fellowships at Harvard Medical School: Ocular Neuroimmunology at Schepens Eye Research Institute and Neuroimmunology at Brigham and Women's Hospital. He then completed an Internship in internal medicine at Montefiore Medical Center, Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, NY, and a residency in Neurology at Columbia University Medical Center in New York, NY.
Dr. Vega received the National Research Service Award from the National Institutes of allergic and Immunologic Diseases. He is fluent in Spanish.
