Luiz Massa, MD
Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R), Spine and Pain Care
Luiz M. Massa, MD, a member of the Health First Medical Group, is board certified in Physiatry by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (ABPMR), and in Electrodiagnostic Medicine by the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine (ABEM). He is Fellowship trained in Interventional Pain Management of Spinal Disorders by the Florida Spine Institute (FSI). He holds medical licenses from both the State of Florida Board of Medicine and the State of South Carolina Board of Medicine.
He completed a Medical Degree from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, in Miami, FL. He then proceeded to complete an Internship in Internal Medicine at Saint Vincent’s Medical Center’s New York Medical College program, a Residency in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at the University of Miami at the Jackson Memorial Hospital, and a Fellowship in Interventional Pain Management of Spinal Disorders from the Florida Spine Institute, in Clearwater, FL.
Before joining Health First, Dr. Massa worked for Coastal Spine & Pain Center in Jacksonville Beach, FL., where he expanded a new satellite spine and pain care practice and established and directed a new American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM) accredited Electromyography (EMG) Laboratory where diagnostic tests are conducted to evaluate the body’s nerve and muscle function and assess a potential neurological disease.
He then provided physiatrist interventional spine care and pain management services in a private group practice setting at The Institute of Pain Management in Jacksonville, FL.
Prior to that position, he established a physiatrist practice for evaluation, triage, and interventional spine care with Lyerly Neurosurgery, a regional neurosurgery hospital-based group practice in Jacksonville, FL.
Prior to medical school, Dr. Massa earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Electronic Engineering from the Aeronautical Institute of Technology in Brazil, a Master of Science degree in Computer Science from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, and a Master of Business Administration degree from Pace University, in White Plains, NY. He served eleven years in the engineering field; first as a Systems Analyst for EXXON Corporation, then as a Research and Development engineer for the Brazilian Space Research Institute, and finally as a Systems Integration engineer for the IBM Corporation.
Dr. Massa has published numerous research articles on various topics, including two articles published in The Journal of Spinal Cord Medicine entitled “Osteomyelitis in Heterotopic Ossification,” and “Validity, Accuracy and Predictive Value of Urinary Tract Infection Signs and Symptoms in Individuals with Spinal Cord Injury on Intermittent Catheterization.” He has earned numerous honors and awards, including the Ernest Bors Award for Scientific Development from the American Paraplegia Society in 2010. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation; and a Fellow of the American Academy of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine. Dr. Massa is a member of the Spine Intervention Society.
Dr. Massa has completed numerous courses in his field of practice. Most recently, he completed the Ultra EMG Course at The Ohio State University School of Medicine in Kauai, Hawaii; The High Yield MSK & Spine Ultrasound Applications by the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in Tampa, FL.; The Principles and Practice of Pain Medicine at the Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA.; The Excellent IME Master’s Class at the 34th Annual SEAK National Workers Compensation and Occupational Medicine Conference in Hyannis, MS.; the MAYO Clinic Electromyography (EMG) and Neurophysiology in Clinical Practice course in Amelia Island, FL., and the Cervical Procedures Bio-Skills Lab at the Spine Intervention Society in Phoenix, AZ.
He is fluent in English and Portuguese, and proficient in conversational Spanish.
