Ernest Block, MD, FACS, FCCM
Ernest Block, MD is Board-certified in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care. He is Director of Acute Care Surgery for the Health First Holmes Regional Medical Center's Department of Surgery. He was named as the Trauma Medical Director for the Florida Department of Health (DOH). In this role, he will provide medical expertise to DOH's planning, development, implementation and evaluation of Florida's Trauma System. This will include the areas of adult and pediatric trauma care, disaster preparedness, mass casualty response and injury prevention.
Dr. Block earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art History and Biochemistry from Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. He then completed a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tenn.
Dr. Block earned his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Miami School of Medicine. He completed his Residency in General Surgery at the Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia, Pa. At the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital, he completed Fellowships in both Trauma and Surgical Critical Care.
Dr. Block began his career as a surgeon in 1994 and has worked in large hospital settings throughout his career. In Shreveport, La., Dr. Block was attending surgeon for Summit Rehabilitation Institute and Willis-Knighton Medical Center. While there, he also served as Director of Surgical Critical Care and later Chief of Trauma Services for Louisiana State University Hospital. Dr. Block then moved to Orlando where he served as Director of Trauma Services for Orlando Regional Medical Center.
Dr. Block has years of academic experience as an educator to physicians. He began as Assistant Professor of Surgery at Louisiana State University Medical Center in Shreveport, La. He then served as Associate Director, Surgical Education for Orlando Regional Medical Center. He was Clinical Professor of Surgery for both the University of Florida School of Medicine and the Department of Clinical Sciences for Florida State University College of Medicine. He currently serves as Professor of Surgery for the University of Central Florida College of Medicine. He is a past President of the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma and past President of the Florida Chapter of the American College of Surgeons.
Dr. Block is certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Advanced Trauma Life Support, Prehospital Trauma Life Support, Disaster Management and Emergency Preparedness, and Fundamental Critical Care Support. He is an instructor for all of these certification programs. He is also an Ultrasound instructor for the American College of Surgeons, and a Lead Reviewer of the Trauma Designation Program for the Missouri Department of Health.
Born in Los Angeles, Dr. Block and his wife Susan have three children.
