Dr. Atanassov has served as Trauma/Surgical Critical Care/General Surgery Attending Physician at Staten Island University Hospital in NY, where he was a Clerkship Director at Department of Surgery. He had an academic appointment as Assistant Professor of Surgery at Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine in Hampstead, NY.

Dr. Atanassov is a Fellow of American College of Surgeons (FACS). He is also an active member of American Medical Association (AMA), Eastern Association for Surgery of Trauma (EAST), American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP), Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES).

Dr. Atanassov has special interests in penetrating abdominal trauma injuries, management of rib fractures with nonsurgical and surgical approach, upper and lower gastrointestinal surgery and biliary surgery. He has completed extensive medical research and presentations in his field. He has been active in teaching and training surgical residents and medical students.
