Health First and Brevard County Fire Rescue Team Up to Educate Public About Turkey Fryer Safety

Click Here to See Video of Demonstration at Health First Viera Hospital

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, it’s important to remember safety tips when it comes to turkey fryers. While this special day is one to spend with family and friends, it’s also the peak day for home cooking fires. That’s why Health First and Brevard County Fire Rescue teamed up to provide a unique demonstration at Health First Viera Hospital to show people how quickly a fire can ignite when a frozen turkey is placed in a fryer. Using a thawed one is the safe way to deep fry a turkey.

  • Between 2006 and 2010, U.S. fire departments responded to an average of 157,300 home structure fires per year that involved cooking equipment.
    • These fires caused an average of 380 fire deaths, 4,920 injuries and $794 in property damage.
    • During this time frame, cooking equipment caused 42% of reported home fires, 38% of home fire injuries, 15% of home fire deaths and 11% of the direct property damage.
