Health First Health Plans appoints Chris Sorensen as chief operating officer

ROCKLEDGE, FL - Today, Health First Health Plans President and CEO Margaret Haney announced the appointment of Chris Sorensen as chief operating officer of Health First Health Plans (HFHP).

In this position, Sorensen will be responsible for strategic planning and business development to identify opportunities for membership growth and plan participation in new insurance programs designated by the recent healthcare legislation. He will also direct general operations for HFHP.

Sorensen joined Health First in 1997 as a Risk Manager at Holmes Regional Medical Center, and later transferred to Cape Canaveral Hospital, where he served as director of Risk Management and Medical Staff operations. During his nine-year tenure there, he gained experience in physician recruiting, Medical Staff bylaws-sanctioned committees, The Joint Commission accreditation process, maintenance of Medical Staff bylaws, and hospital licensure as a member of Cape Canaveral Hospital's executive leadership team.

For nearly three years, Sorensen has served as Health First's chief compliance officer and VP of Corporate Risk Management. His duties included procuring applicable lines of insurance, co-chairing the Patient Safety Committee, and overseeing the Corporate Compliance Program.

"Being a locally-based health plan, it was important to select someone who understands the specific healthcare needs of our community here on the Space Coast," Haney said. "Chris brings a wealth of experience to the Health First Health Plans team during a time when the overall healthcare climate remains relatively unpredictable. His depth of knowledge will be critical to ensuring that Health First Health Plans continues to deliver the best services and opportunities to our members."

Sorensen has a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management as well as a Master of Science degree in Health Services Administration, both from the University of Central Florida. Board- certified in Health Care Management, he is also a Fellow of the American College of Health Care Executives.

Health First Health Plans is a proud member of the Health First family!
