Categories of oversight

Health First VitalWatch

Category I Category II Category III Category IV

Initiate only emergent interventions for life-threatening conditions (i.e. cardiac arrest, life-threatening arrhythmia, unplanned extubation).

Notify attending physician and/or appropriate consultants immediately of these events and all other situations.

Category I +
Initiate minor non-emergent therapies (i.e. electrolyte replacement, chest physiotherapy)

Implement Basic Ventilator Bundle:

  • Appropriate DVT prophylaxis
  • Stress ulcer prophylaxis
  • HOB elevated to > 300 when not contraindicated

Notify attending physician and/or appropriate consultants immediately of these events and all other situations.

Category II +
Maintain therapies outlined in existing patient care plan (i.e. ventilator support, weaning plan, fluid support, vasoactive regimen, and antibiotics).

Implement Expanded Ventilator Bundle:

  • Appropriate DVT prophylaxis
  • Stress ulcer prophylaxis
  • HOB elevated to > 300 when not contraindicated
  • Intensive blood glucose control where indicated
  • Optimization of patient sedation and analgesia

Notify attending physician and/or appropriate consultants immediately of all other situations.

Category III +
Initiate new therapies as needed (i.e. evaluation and therapy of new fever, ventilator weaning and adjustments, volume resuscitation, initiate and titrate vasoactive regimens).

Implement Expanded Ventilator Bundle.

Notify attending physician and/or appropriate consultants of major changes in patient status.
