What is an Interventional Radiologist?

Interventional Radiologists specialize in minimally-invasive, targeted treatments using imaging guidance. Interventional Radiology procedures often can be done instead of open surgical procedures and are generally easier for patients because they are less painful with no large incisions, offer less risk of complications, and typically require shorter recovery times than most surgeries. These physicians offer the most in-depth knowledge of the least-invasive treatments coupled with diagnostic and clinical experience across specialties. Interventional Radiologists use X-rays, CT, and other imaging to insert and advance a catheter (usually in an artery) to non-surgically treat the source of a disease or injury.

What are the advantages of Interventional Radiology?

  • Most procedures can be performed on an outpatient basis or require only a short hospital stay.
  • General anesthesia usually isn't required.
  • Risk, pain, and recovery time are often significantly reduced.
  • Procedures are sometimes less expensive than surgery or other alternatives.
