The "golden hour" is our Golden Rule
As one of the most critical points of care in the hospital, Holmes Regional Trauma Center is designed to treat the most life-threatening injuries. To achieve this designation, there are several criteria that must be met, including providing dedicated trauma surgeons, emergency physicians, and anesthesiologists on-site 24/7, a dedicated operating room that's also available 24/7, interaction with staff from critical care units, Radiology, and other support teams, as well as community outreach.
Our goal is to provide a full spectrum of trauma services, from safety and injury prevention programs, to advanced life-saving care for patients, to follow-up treatment at our Trauma Clinic.
Holmes Regional Trauma Center is the only state-accredited Level II trauma center serving Brevard and Indian River counties and treats approximately 1,200 trauma cases each year, saving many lives during the critical Golden Hour after a traumatic injury occurs, most of which arrive at the Center following major automobile crashes.
Holmes Regional Trauma Center recently opened its new greater-capacity facility that can treat up to ten trauma patients in five acute resuscitation rooms (including two trauma bays) in addition to the new adjoining Emergency Department that can now treat many more patients simultaneously, including patients from mass casualties/disasters.
The Trauma Center is served by First Flight, the only air ambulance service in East Central Florida, which can now land directly above the Trauma Center on the new facility's rooftop helipad, with dedicated elevator access to trauma care services. The new helipad is large enough for up to two Black Hawk military or off-shore rescue helicopters to land. Holmes Regional Trauma Center is also the designated trauma center for NASA, should NASA's astronauts need to eject shortly after launch.
The future of trauma care is here now
On September 28, 2006, Holmes Regional Medical Center opened its new 43,000-sq.-ft. Trauma Center/Emergency Department (ED) on the first floor of its new eight-story Heart Center/emergency services complex addition.
The new Trauma Center features three acute resuscitation trauma rooms and two trauma suites providing expanded capability for up to 10 critically injured patients. Each trauma suite can support two patients and features hydraulic Berchtold life support booms, Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) viewers, portable digital X-ray, and ultrasound capability.
The new Radiology PACS system in the Trauma Center allows physicians immediate 24/7 access to digital radiology images and reports. It can be accessed by certified clinicians from any computer connected to the Internet on a patient floor or even in a physician's home to view Trauma patient images, improving the speed of diagnosis and treatment for Trauma patients.
The new Trauma/ED also features a larger ambulance dock with off-loading for five ambulances and waiting space for 10; an outside decontamination area outfitted with showers, plus a private entrance to indoor isolation treatment zones; enhanced work spaces for associates; private dictation and consult rooms for physicians; and a dedicated EMS work area. New Cisco portable phones allow direct communication with EMS radio traffic.
The new emergency services complex at Holmes also accommodates on-site storage of bomb, blast, and burn preparedness supplies acquired through federal grants following 9/11.
