About cardiac rehabilitation at Cape Canaveral Hospital

Our comprehensive Cardiac Rehabilitation program at Cape Canaveral Hospital is designed to meet your individual needs with education, exercise, and support. Our program is nationally accredited by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR).

American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation

Our inpatient program is just the beginning

If you or a family member is receiving cardiac care, your clinical history may include:

  • Angina or heart failure due to any cause
  • Arrhythmia
  • Congenital defect repair
  • Coronary angioplasty (PCTA) stent
  • Coronary artery bypass surgery
  • Heart valve repair/replacement
  • Mycardial infarction
  • Pre-/post-heart transplantation
  • Pulmonary disease

Our inpatient Cardiac Rehabilitation program provides you and your family with guidelines for managing your care after discharge, including activities of daily living, medication prescribed by your physician, diet modification, and risk factor reduction.

Taking the next step...

Our outpatient program is designed to get you on the right track with exercise, education, and teamwork

Exercise: Your exercise regimen is based on your heart health profile and a graded stress test evaluation from your referring physician. After assessing your condition and personal goals, you're scheduled for monitored exercise training. Patients who may fear physical activity following cardiac procedures gain confidence by being active in a medically supervised setting. Regular exercise is important because it improves tolerance and stamina and helps you achieve and maintain an optimal level of health and wellness. It can also decrease blood pressure, assist in weight control, reduce stress, and enhance your ability to perform daily activities.

Your team: Your Cardiac Rehabilitation team includes the medical director, your referring physician, a registered nurse, an exercise specialist, and a registered dietitian. Your team can help you identify current habits that may negatively affect your heart condition and learn how to incorporate heart-healthy habits into your lifestyle. But, as you'll learn, you're the most important member of the team, because only you can choose to exercise, and only you can quit smoking or make other important lifestyle and habit changes such as following a heart-healthy diet.

Education: Our comprehensive Cardiac Rehabilitation education program will teach you ways to live a healthier life. Topics include:

  • Behavioral modification
  • Cholesterol and lipid management
  • Exercise guidelines
  • Heart anatomy and physiology
  • Heart-healthy diet
  • Hypertension
  • Risks and contributing behavior factors to heart disease
  • Stress management

Insurance benefits: One-hour sessions are scheduled three times a week over an 8- to 12-week period. Most insurance providers, including medicare, cover cardiac rehabilitation. We can discuss any details of treatment with you and help you check your personal insurance policy for specific coverage so that you understand your reimbursement level prior to full enrollment in the program.

Making the transition to a Pro-Health & Fitness Center and taking charge of your continuing

After completion of the outpatient Cardiac Rehabilitation program, our staff can help you make the transition to an exercise program at a Pro-Health & Fitness Center near you. We'll collaborate with the Pro-Health & Fitness staff to coordinate an orientation program that will introduce you to the center's state-of-the-art exercise equipment designed to meet your continuing fitness goals.

The referral process

If you're interested in participating in the Cardiac Rehabilitation program at Cape Canaveral Hospital, speak with your physician (cardiologist or primary care provider). Your physician can initiate your referral with our Cardiac Rehabilitation Department. When all the necessary documentation is received, we'll contact you to schedule an appointment.

Cardiac Rehabilitation helps you

  • Feel better faster
  • Continue getting stronger
  • Reduce risks of future heart problems
  • Reduce stress
  • Live healthier

Building your support network: Breaking old habits and learning new ones can be stressful, but family members and friends can make a dramatic difference in your recovery process. They can give you the emotional support you need to help you adjust to a new, healthier lifestyle, control your risk factors, and stick with heart-healthy living. Your family members may want to learn more about heart disease so they can give you the emotional support you need to help you adjust to a new, healthier lifestyle, control your risk factors, and stick with heart-healthy living. Your family members may want to learn more about heart disease so they can be even more helpful. For example, they may have to learn how to let you do things for yourself. Or they may want to learn about preparing heart-healthy meals.

You and your family may also benefit from the support of others who have heart disease. Our Cardiac Rehabilitation staff can provide information about local support groups that may be of help.
