Tropical Storm Emily - July 31, 2017 - 4:00 pm Update

updated: Monday July 31 2017 4:05 PM

This morning, Tropical Storm Emily formed off the west coast of Florida in the Gulf of Mexico. As of the 2 p.m. National Hurricane Center update, the storm is located inland over west-central Florida and moving to the east at about 10 mph. Tropical Storm Emily is forecast to continue moving across Central Florida tonight and offshore the east-central coast by Tuesday morning around 2 a.m.

Tropical Storm Emily is a weak system and expected to further weaken as it crosses the state. Throughout today, Brevard is expected to experience scattered thunderstorms with periods of heavy rainfall, especially late afternoon and into this evening. Some areas can expect up to four inches of rain, and low-lying, poorly drained areas can experience localized flooding. The threat for wind gusts and sustained winds (20 mph) will increase after midnight and continue through sunrise Tuesday as the center moves offshore into the Atlantic. There is also the small possibility of tornadic activity.

Earlier today, Governor Rick Scott issued a State of Emergency for Brevard and many other Florida counties as a preparedness action only. No evacuation orders are in place or expected.

At this time, we do not have plans to implement our hurricane procedures. However, we do encourage you to be prepared. If you see any storm damage at any of our Health First locations, please contact Security at 321.434.8911.
