Donald F. Hagen, MD, FACS

Dr. Hagen joined the Health First Board of Trustees in November 2012 and has a distinguished background with the U.S. Navy.

Dr. Hagen is a retired U.S. Navy vice admiral and Navy surgeon general. He served as commander of the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD from 1989 to 1991, and served as the surgeon general of the U.S. Navy from 1991 to 1995. Following his service with the U.S. Navy, Dr. Hagen was the executive vice chancellor for the University of Kansas Medical Center.

Dr. Hagen earned many honors throughout his medical and military career, including the U.S. Navy's Bronze Star Award with Combat "V", the Meritorious Service Medal, and the Legion of Merit. He was also awarded the Distinguished Service Medal, the Surgeon General's Medallion/U.S. Public Health Service, and the Undersecretary of Health Award/Veterans Administration. He was presented with the American Hospital Association Federal Healthcare Award for Excellence in 1989.

Dr. Hagen earned his bachelor of science in medicine at the University of North Dakota, and holds a bachelor of arts from Concordia College in Moorhead, MN. After earning his medical degree at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL, Dr. Hagen performed his general surgery residency at the Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, VA and an internship at Los Angeles County General Hospital in CA. Dr. Hagen is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
